The body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing the body weight in kilograms by the height in meters squared (kg/m²). The World Health Organization (WHO) distinguishes between six categories:

  • Underweight: < 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight: ≥ 25
  • Preadiposity: 25-29.9
  • Obesity grade I: 30 – 34.9
  • Obesity grade II: 35 – 39.9
  • Obesity grade III: ≥ 40
